Why Latin and Greek?
"Useless! Boring! Hard! It's killing my GPA!! You can't talk to anyone in Latin, except maybe the Pope! What can you do with Latin and Greek except become a Classics teacher?" Classics teachers hear these complaints all the time. The best answer, the answer I always give, is that the world we in the West live in is still very much a Greek and Latin world. Not just in our English vocabulary, though that is very true, but in the ideas and concepts those words represent. The best reason, then, to study the Classics is to know the world you live in -- and yourself -- better. And the best way to study the Classics is through the Greek and Latin languages. As the Roman orator, politician, and philosopher Cicero once wrote, Nescire quid antequam natus sis acciderit, id est semper puerum esse, To be ignorant of what happened before you were born is to be a child forever.
